COTE D'AZUR Honeymoon or perhaps second honeymoon? Whatever, just cobble together any old excuse to treat your most favourite person to a stay at Le Hameau. It is a sublime, impossibly romantic hotel. Some of the shutters on the converted farm buildings are carved with tiny hearts and you can even book a room called Le Nid d’Amour. The little footpaths that criss-cross the garden are shaded by trellised arbours and bordered with a profusion of lime, jasmine, bougainvillea and honeysuckle...

NORMANDY First impressions are good – a huge expanse of lawn with yew hedges and glorious herbaceous borders. The interior of this stately chateau, nestling in 75 acres of magnificent parkland, reflects the classical elegance of its 18th century architecture, with spacious salons, some exquisite antiques, vases of fresh flowers and lots of daylight...

BRITTANY Difficult to imagine how Gérard and Danielle Jouanny's hotel can get any better. The cuisine (plenty of local fish and sea food) is excellent, as is the impeccable and very friendly service. DORDOGNE/LOT A most comfortable hotel in a pretty limestone village above a broad loop of the Dordogne. The lovely gardens, complete with diddy little bridges over a brook, are from an original design by Vilmorin. An old tobacco dryer serves as the stage for Michelin-starred cuisine by Vincent Arnould. The owner is Bernard Giraudel, a self-professed ‘marchand de bonheur’ who runs the show with the sort of confidence inspired by previous Giraudels having lived here for the last 450 years...

LOIRE VALLEY This well-known hotel is only 5 minutes’ walk from the most romantic château in France. Set in the middle of a rather nondescript village, it’s a quaint 18th century post house that has been owned by the Jeudi family since 1902. There is a shady, flower-bedecked terrace for summer meals and a charming, beamed dining room. Most bedrooms are furnished with antiques...
