This well-known hotel is only 5 minutes’ walk from the most romantic château in France. There are four small buildings plus the old school house and the higgledy-piggledy layout of paths and gardens only adds to the overall charm. The secluded swimming pool is just across the road.

There is a shady, flower-bedecked terrace for summer meals and a charming, beamed dining room. Antoine Jeudi is the chef. Creations such as Gambas, pomme purée parfumée à la truffe, emulsion de champignons des bois ensure that his restaurant keeps its Michelin star. Ask Claude, the gardener, to show off his potager, with its numerous tomato varieties and wonderful array of aromatic herbs. Menus are quite short so guests staying more than a few days may need to choose instead from the fairly expensive carte. A few reviewers have found the service 'cool to the point of being robotic’ but there is, after all, a less formal and sophisticated dining option in the same village.

Most bedrooms are furnished with antiques. Some face a rose garden while those on the road are double-glazed. The large lounges are comfortable but the elegant, country house décor may seem at odds with the rustic origins of the inn.
