There is no shortage of hotels in the immediate vicinity of the Gué du Holme. Few, however, understood the fine balance between quality and value better than Monsieur and Madame Pignot who took over in 2011.

First indications are that the restaurant's reputation for succulent flavours, sensible prices and subtle presentation are being maintained by the new chef/patron, Monsieur Pignot, while Madame looks after front of house. This is modern French cooking with both feet firmly on the ground. Or, perhaps, with toes firmly in the water, as local lobster and oysters compete with salt meadow lamb on the interesting carte.

The hotel is ‘connu surtout pour son restaurant’ because the location, although OK, is on a busy road in the middle of a village with a chiming church clock. Nevertheless the bedrooms at the rear are tranquil and overlook the neat garden. True, they may vary a little in size but all are comfortable and carefully modernised.

Standards of service are equally professional, whether you take just a bargain-priced plat rapide off the blackboard at lunchtime or an excellent menu gourmand in the evening. Crisp white linen, sparkling glass and polished silverware are the norm in the elegant dining room. At breakfast, nearly everything is home-made. This is an establishment where corners are unlikely to be cut.
