Ile-d'Aix is a car-free oasis whose sole link with the mainland is the ferry from Fouras (20 minute trip, every half-hour or so).     Hence, once the last of the day trippers clamber aboard just after 8 pm, this delightfully unspoiled mini-world feels like your very own island, shared only by the locals and a few other tourists. If therefore you yearn for a romantic, peaceful and timeless maritime hideaway, look no further than the Napoléon, the island's only hotel.

The quaint, weather-worn facade belies the fact that the hotel was renovated top to bottom in 2010.   Some will say that the interior (uncompromisingly Starck/Kartell/Ghost) is not really in keeping with the spirit of the island; yet these are the same people who bemoan the lack of air/con and imperfect sound-proofing.  Happily most of the accommodation is quite spacious although first floor rooms overlooking the harbour are preferred to those at ground level.

The best place to eat on the island is Chez Josephine, the hotel's own bistro, where locally sourced produce is given an innovative twist.  Spend a day on the beach or hire a bike to ride around the island - it takes only an hour.  Later, a gentle stroll beside the moonlit ocean after a relaxed dinner in the restaurant is just about as good as it gets.   Go for it!
