There’s a very good reason to book an autumn break at this nigh-on perfect hotel. It’s the time of year when a vast carpet of cyclamen is laid under the trees at the entrance to the parc. They’re arguably the finest you’ll ever see.

Whatever the season, this handsome, pepper-potted Second Empire mansion has glorious views over the valley from its south-facing dining terrace. Once inside, it is faintly reminiscent of the family seat of a kindly old aristo, supremely comfortable, totally uncontrived. Anne and Xavier Olivereau are the fourth generation of owner-managers. Their accommodations are all quite different, some suites having a deck with a beautiful view while others are in the turrets. Another eight luxurious rooms are in converted stables.

In the newly redecorated Orangerie restaurant, chef Freddy Lefebvre's menus are based on 'la richesse du terroir'. St Pierre rôti au four, souskay de mangue, tartare de tomates is an example of his complex, subtle, delicious cooking. The service is very good, especially at dinner.

You can stroll across the lawn, past the inviting pool and down to the river where a rowing boat awaits guests wanting to dabble in the slow waters of the Indre. The best known Loire châteaux (Villandry, Chenonceaux, etc) are all within an easy drive.
