The Brix family have owned the Hotel de France et Fuchsias for many years and seemed content until recently to be known as a restaurant with rooms. The restaurant has a sound reputation for winning ways with the produce from the family farm and the pick of the day's catch from the harbour.

The rooms - and there are quite a lot of them - never pretended to be anything more somewhere to crash out after a memorable dinner. But an effort has been made to spruce up the annexe so do insist on superior accommodation when you book, safe in the knowledge that even at these higher prices the frills will be few and far between.

Gastronomy aside, the highlights of your stay in St-Vaast are likely to be the hotel's sub-tropical garden (eucalyptus, banana trees and 100 year old fuchsias) plus the little port itself. The harbour is very picturesque and the views towards the Ile de Tatihon are charming. All this is within 20 miles of Cherbourg so the hotel makes for a rewarding, very French base for a foodie-friendly short break.
