The charming, romantic Villa Fol Avril is a French interpretation of the British gastro pub, albeit with a few bedrooms that were refurbished at the same time as the restaurant. This particular village lies in the bucolic Perche region, a tranquil, little-known area of Normandy where we find rural France at its most unspoilt.
Expect therefore to find wellies in the porch and a blazing log fire indoors when the weather or the season does not allow service on the wisteria-clad terrace. The cuisine is simple and wholesome, as indeed is the welcome from the owners. They have chosen an up-to-the-minute designer look for the accommodation, adhering to that subdued 'boutique' uniform which contrasts nicely with the colourful garden.
The Fol Avril is a very good place to stay. The village itself is delightfully pretty with a fine Romanesque church and a centuries-old bridge over the River Corbionne.
