Most people develop a soft spot for St-Jean-de-Luz. It is the most rewarding base for a holiday spent getting to know the Basque Country. Allow a good few days here and try to stay in the heart of town so that, within five or ten minutes' walk, you can be hanging out on the beach, moseying around the quintessential market or sussing out the myriad of restaurants that are crammed into the narrow streets.
Relais St-Jacques is a B&B that fits the bill perfectly. It stands opposite the station (no noise to speak of) and still feels like a recent renovation. Everything is squeaky clean and the accommodation has been intelligently arranged by the cheerful owners. The rooms are not large but they are stylish nonetheless. Pay the top price and you should get a view of the port (check when booking as it's definitely worth the extra).
