Here's a particularly attractive bastide dating from about 1850 and set in a peaceful village at the heart of the Arles-Avignon-St-Remy 'golden triangle'. A handsome hotel, therefore, enhanced by a garden planted with box, lavender and oleander and shaded by fine 200 year old plane trees.

The heated swimming pool is particularly welcome after a day's sightseeing. Given the quietly calming ambience, however, let's just say that families with excitable children might be happier elsewhere. In this way, the serenity of this small, boutique hotel is likely to be broken only by the chime of the church clock.

Cuisine is simple with meticulously chosen ingredients featuring on the 3 course menu (Wed & Sun) or on the cold table on other evenings.  A couple of restaurants are within walking distance in the village.   The accommodation is dressed in that masculine, boutique-hotel uniform of grey, beige, mud and white; the top-priced bedrooms get you a king-size bed. Bathrooms have the same designer look and are as pristine and as immaculately honed as the rest of the hotel.

Such places can, at first glance, appear a tad soulless but the knowledgeable Franco-Dutch couple who own the Bastide de Boulbon are so courteously friendly, so perceptive to their guests' every need that any such notion disappears soon after arrival. Hence this is an hotel that is memorable for being nigh-on perfect.
