Don't even think about this hotel if you cannot cope with small rooms. Let's face it, if you want to stay in the historic heart of St-Malo and soak up the unique Intra Muros ambience, you are committed to listed buildings with limited space. And for people on a short break without much luggage, the Hotel San Pedro makes for an entertaining base at a rock bottom price.

Plus points are the San Pedro's location - central and yet close to the ramparts and the Bon Secours beach with its sea water pool. The bedrooms feel a bit like ferry cabins but were renovated in 2004 with an appropriate nautical theme which is both simple and restful. And then there is Mireille Morice, the owner. To say that breakfast is a performance would be an understatement but this paragon of French eccentricity and good humour prides herself on the little surprises that she has in store for you each morning.

St-Malo has lots of OK B&B hotels but few have as much personality as the San Pedro.
