Tizzano is probably how everyone imagines the Med as it was fifty years ago. A cute fishing hamlet at the end of a cul-de-sac road; a bit of low key development and a handful of simple, family-run restaurants; a sandy beach on the doorstep plus a few idyllic nearby coves best accessed by boat; and a small, pieds-dans-l'eau hotel where you're bowled over by the patron's infectious charm. The whole package wrapped up in tranquil days where the main events appear to be sunrise and sunset.

Trust me on this one: these places are increasingly hard to come by but immensely rewarding if you happen to stumble across them. As you will see from the photos, the Hotel du Golfe is far from photogenic. But the essentials are all there in spades: clean, comfortable rooms, meticulously maintained and each with a balcony affording a mesmerising sea view. Breakfast is a generous and inexpensive buffet. For dinner on a candle-lit terrace as you gaze out over the Med, try the Restaurant du Golfe. It is independently owned by the delightfully youthful Tamburini family (Marina, Lois and Sébastien) and their fish will have been selected from the best of the day's catch as the boats tied up on the quayside.

Quite simply - too good to miss.
