Here's a chic, ultra-contemporary hotel that offers a luxurious base in a largely overlooked corner of this stunningly beautiful island. Before le Golfe came on the scene, those who sought the beguiling tranquility of the Porto Pollo area were obliged to settle for no frills accommodation in the form of campsites in the herb-scented maquis or the odd hotel which seemed locked in an eighties' time warp.

Then along came smarty-pants Golfe with a crisply serious attitude - boasting, for heaven's sake, a Philip Starck bistro decked out in his trade-mark perspex, metal and leather. Hence well-healed honeymooners no longer have to endure the brown furniture and hand held showers of yesteryear.

There's now a spa and a somewhat claustrophobic pool but the beach is almost on the doorstep, just beyond the marina. The patron is a charismatic Corsican and his discreetly helpful staff can direct you to the clued-up dive centre next door or arrange for the hotel boat to ply the coast for a picnic trip to a deserted beach. All of the sleek rooms have sun-trap terraces overlooking the Golfe de Valinco and size matters - it dictates their price. True there's an excellent, cheaper alternative in nearby Tizzano but, if the Golfe's distinctive style happens to match your own, it can only enhance your enduring love affair with Corsica.
