Fed up with the current fad for minimalist decor? Tired of the sea of grey, chocolate and maroon that hotel bedroom designers use to set off their dazzling white pillowcases? If enough is enough, step back in time and greet the Beursaudière, the antithesis of today's boutique hotels.
We're talking waitresses kitted out in traditional Burgundian dress and bedrooms with a different artisan theme from way back when - an excuse to stuff the place with loads of antique knickknacks garnered from local sale rooms. And in the bathrooms, there's none of those modern saucer shaped sinks which splash everywhere when you turn on the tap. Beursaudière has proper basins set in solid wooden cabinets.
Here we have a 12th century priory linked to a medieval pigeonier so expect massive oak beams and exposed stone walls. The whole of the public space indoors is given over to the restaurant. Good, tasty, traditional fare keep the three dining areas full for most of the year. The vaulted cellar, so typical of vine growing areas, is an atmospheric space for breakfast, which is as generous as the portions served at dinner.
Romantic? No, romantic it ain't. Busy? Yes, ever so - but then you can always retire to one of the comfortable bedrooms, some of which have huge private terraces.
