Medieval St-Emilion is one of those places that has to be seen, even if you cannot arrange a second mortgage to stock up your cellar with its best wines. Some hotels inevitably cater for those who can but the Logis des Remparts is a centrally-situated, middle-of-the-road B&B where the owners haven’t sat back and waited for the coffers to fill effortlessly with stopover business.

The accommodations have a stylishly contemorary design and the whiter-than-white bathrooms are equipped with hair-dryers. Street-side with shower is the cheapest option with supplements payable for bath and/or rooms at the rear. There is a lift, albeit only for your luggage so that you don’t have to hump it up the stone staircase, and a lock-up car park free for all b ut the cheapest rooms) which is invaluable in such a popular town.

They even provide umbrellas in case it’s raining when you set off in search of one of the restaurants that line the pedestrianised, cobbled streets. Depending on the level of occupancy, the buffet breakfast can be a bit of a bun fight but it is moved onto the terrace in fine weather; fresh fruit is a welcome addition to the norm.

And to encourage you to linger a few nights in this somewhat impersonal hotel, there is a good-sized swimming pool and a garden in which to relax after a day of exhausting dégustation.
