The Hotel Castellas consists of three honey-coloured village houses grouped around an internal courtyard with a plunge pool at its lowest level. It’s a tranquil location roughly at the centre of the Avignon, Nîmes and Uzès triangle. The Pont du Gard is almost on the doorstep.

Courage is the name of the game here. The owning Aparis family have decorated each room with a different theme and, although some are fairly conventional, others are wildly eccentric. The idea was to doff a cap at the artists and sculptors who found inspiration in the medieval village – it’s for you to judge if the initiative succeeds. The size and price of the accommodations vary greatly so choose carefully and ask for a recent renovation since apparently some rooms are beginning to show their age.

The restuarant's Michelin star has gone awol (2014) while new chef Stephane Maziere finds his feet.   Perhaps a rather more relaxed ambience will now prevail since the previous disciplined restaurant service could be a tad OTT too theatrical.   Reviews eagerly awaited.
