A sophisticated hotel converted from a four-square 1900s villa, Tri Men is perched directly above the Odet river in peaceful, pine-shaded grounds. On the opposite bank lies Benodet, the prettiest yachting centre on the south Breton coast. The tidy, box-hedged rose garden and the glimpse of sailing boats returning to their moorings set a tranquil scene for new arrivals.

Once inside, it is easy to identify the benefits of the complete renovation under the direction of a Catalan architect, a friend of the charming owners. The décor in the bar/lounge is suitably nautical – contemporary and minimalist but unfussy without sacrificing comfort. Our favourite rooms are nos 7 and 16 in the middle (Belle Chambre) category - unless you opt for no 3, a top of the range Grande Chambre with an enormous terrace. Smaller Classique rooms are with shower instead of bath.

The restaurant (open only for dinner, mid-April - mid-November) is where chef Frédéric Claquin displays his skill with the best of the day’s catch. When closed, stroll down to the port where the Bistro du Bac is under the same ownership as the hotel. Although there is no direct access to the sea, dining al fresco on Tri Men's teak deck is likely to be a highlight of your stay. Start with one of their Spritz aperitifs: a beguiling mix of champagne, Campari and lemon.
