Built of local pink granite, this beautiful 19th-century Breton manor house stands atop a wooded headland on the edge of a popular north coast resort. Luxurious without being stuffy, it enjoys an elevated position amidst immaculate grounds within walking distance of fine, sandy beaches.

Bedrooms vary in size, superior rooms having a separate wc and usually a separate shower. All the elegantly-appointed accommodation affords breathtaking southerly views towards the Isle Milliau. Incidentally, for a totally contrasting Robinson Crusoe adventure, you can rent an overnight refuge on the tiny island – from the sublime to the ridiculous? If scuba diving is more to your taste, there is one of the best centres in Europe almost on the doorstep.

The cordially welcoming owners, Gilles and Luce Daubé, oversee the Michelin-starred restaurant where the recently-appointed chef Mathieu Kergourlay specialises in sea food. The staff are discreet yet friendly and, at dinner, formally dressed in splendid long jackets. Half-board (obligatory 25 June-15 Sept) allows free choice from a wide-ranging, unchanging carte which is replaced by a set menu on Mondays and Tuesdays. At busy times, reserve a table in whichever dining room you prefer. Breakfast, served until ten in the restaurant, noon in your room, comes with fresh orange juice, croissants, crêpes, eggs and more.
