Here's a long-standing favourite that just gets better and better.   The Hotel Alisiers stands above Lapoutroie village at 700m, reached after climbing for a couple of miles along country lanes bordered by lush meadows.   Hence a serene calm is assured - it's a perfectly peaceful spot from which to marvel at the panorama formed by the majestic Vosgian Massif.

First impressions are more Alpine chalet than 19th century farmhouse but, amid the uncompromisingly contemporary decor, there are still traces of rusticity from the original building.  Matthias Degouy has taken over the reins from his in-laws.    He has an identical culinary philosophy to that of his father-in-law, one from which Marcel Lanthermann declined to waiver in his 20+ years at the helm;  namely, exclusively fresh ingredients crafted into up-to-date interpretations of regional specialities, yet without any truck to faddishness.   If you opt for the good-value demi-pension, there's always a choice and you are offered dinner even on days when the restaurant is closed.   Oh, and for once the wines are affordable too.

The Hotel Alisiers is a seriously well-run establishment with a tradition of excellence at sensible prices.
