One of the best addresses on Honfleur’s quayside is the Absinthe, a 16th-century presbytery sympathetically converted into an upmarket yet homely hotel. Despite being located at the heart of the action, there is no extraneous noise at night but parking can be dificult - consult the hotel when booking.

The Absinthe is a distinctive hotel which doesn’t take its fortunate location for granted. Unexpected touches like, perhaps, a little box of chocolates on arrival demonstrate just how much they care. Bedrooms, which can be a bit dark, combine traditional style with contemporary trendiness so expect beamed ceilings and excellent modern bathrooms with spa baths. The dearer accommodation in the annexe has views of the harbour and you can book a suite here with its own sauna.

The friendly welcome extends also to the serious restaurant which spills out onto the pedestrianised sea front but there are plenty of reasonably priced bistros within walking distance.

Honfleur is just the ticket for a short break, a romantic week-end or a family get-together. Impossibly picturesque, easily accessible and refreshingly salty, the little port is busy at all times of year.
