Decisions, decisions: Bayeux or Caen? No contest. Bayeux, because alone it escaped massive destruction in 1944 and so retains all of its historic charm. Dine out or eat in? If you prefer the latter, look no further than the trusty Hotel Lion d’Or.

True, the restaurant lost its Michelin star some years ago; but Patrick Mouilleau’s cuisine is always much admired and his menus avoid the high price burden that often comes with the guide’s award. Futhermore, no-one can take away the hotel’s trump card: a quiet, central location from where you can explore the sights on foot, leaving your car in the gated courtyard (limited spaces – book well before arrival).

This 18th century Relais de Poste was converted into an hotel in 1928 and, despite regular investment, some regulars might say it is due for a revamp. The majority, however, like it just the way it is and can point to the fact that three new superior rooms and a suite have been created for fuss-pots.

The friendliness of the staff is appreciated too – nothing seems too much trouble. Think of the Lion d’Or, therefore, as a venerable institution, a comfortable club with an affordable subscription which, thanks to the rather special location, its long-standing members are extremely unlikely to cancel.
