The year round popularity of Aix-en-Provence, one of the most appealing cities in France, makes finding a memorable hotel with a convenient, central location a thoroughly unrewarding task. Overpriced or underdone, too many hotels adopt a take-it-or-leave-it approach.
Not so, the Hotel Cézanne. This unremarkable building was part of the Mercure chain in an earlier life but, following a superb ‘designer’ renovation over three years or so, we now have a stylish boutique hotel with ultra-contemporary décor. The spotless accommodations are especially comfortable, with excellent king-size beds and very good bathrooms. The rooms are remarkably quiet for such a convenient location, just five minutes’ walk from the atmospheric Cours Mirabeau.
This is about as far as you want to be in order to best appreciate the cultural and social life of this lovely city. The train station (not Aix TGV which is outside the city) is nearby and you can walk, too, from the bus terminal where the regular Marseille Airport shuttle drops you off.
Here’s what makes the Cézanne special: they trust you! There’s an honour bar in the lobby with different complimentary goodies each day. And your mini-bar and internet connection are both free. The staff are justifiably proud of their service and you will find them 100% committed to furthering your enjoyment, however brief your stay in Aix.
