Some visitors prefer the calmer, more international ambience of the diplomatic Invalides area to the oh-so-French Latin Quarter. If they choose the Hotel Varenne as their base here, the wonderful garden of the Rodin Museum is just around the corner; the Musée d’Orsay is almost as close, just one stop away on the metro.

But the Varenne would win plaudits even if it were to be located in a less prestigious district. Omnipresent Jean-Marc Pommier took charge in 2002 and oversaw a complete renovation the following year. The result is a stylish hotel within a 19th century town house, blessed with what Monsieur Pommier calls a ‘garden’ - it’s really a decent-sized, leafy courtyard which is perfect for summer breakfasts and still a rarity in the city centre.

Indoors, everything is of the very highest standard - from craftsmen-made furniture to fine linen to bathroom goodies. Accommodations are quiet and more spacious than the 3-star norm. The style is either Louis XVI or Empire and room rates represent excellent value for money, particularly if you take advantage of the website’s internet rate. Continental breakfast (so often a rip-off elsewhere) is also fairly priced and can be supplemented with eggs, cereals and freshly-squeezed juice if required.

The Hotel Varenne is a refined hotel which is managed by people who care. It has character and charm - and seems a world away from the frenzied hub of Paris.
