HOTEL D’AUBUSSON, PARIS

Larger than most of our Memorable Hotels in Paris, the Aubusson has such attentive housekeeping and concierge services that you could be forgiven for thinking that you’re its only guests.

Within the wonderfully atmospheric Left Bank/St-Germain-des-Prés area, the hotel’s situation is as good as it gets. The best way to get to know Paris is on foot and from the hotel you have inspiring walks to just about everywhere that matters (even to the St-Michel RER station for the express CDG airport and Eurostar link).

The Aubusson is outstanding among its four-star peers in the vicinity. Great oak doors, wide enough for a carriage to pass through, lead to an inner courtyard where you can enjoy drinks beside the fountain. The building dates from the 17th century and, although completely renovated, the exposed beams, flagstones and antiques are reminders of its earlier guise. Accommodations are comfortable - nothing OTT - and prices depend on the room size. Bathroom goodies come from Hermès and there’s a different little treat left in the room each evening.

Downstairs the breakfast room has tapestries (of course) and there’s a welcoming log fire in the elegant lobby. The bar doubles as Café St Laurent - a long-established music venue where a jazz band plays on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings until 12.30. The ambience is terrific but ask for a room away from the noise if you prefer to retire early.

The Aubusson is our favourite 4 star hotel in Paris. Elegant, spacious and very French, this is an unashamedly exhilarating hotel - a much better bet in our view than than the rather staid Relais Christine just around the corner.
