ALPS Can’t help thinking that this hotel has got all the ingredients for an authentic skiing holiday. OK, so the lack of a heated pool will upset the Russians and the dated decor might offend those whose Armani ski gear is less than 10 years old. But, for the rest of us, WOW:

You must first understand that there is no access to the hotel by car. At 1650m, you are right on the piste (inches away from the Adray chairlift); but if you phone from the village, Monsieur Bonnet or one of his friendly team will send a snow-buggy (moto-neige) to collect you. And there’s something immensely satisfying about being dumped in a snow field, marooned for the night in an hotel where the welcome is as good as the cuisine. Are you getting the picture?

Anyone who is anyone in Méribel seems to congregate on the Adray Télébar’s terrace for a brasserie-style lunch. It faces due south and the views are fabulous. In the evening, the hotel restaurant goes the whole hog with Savoyard specialities and other appetising fare. The ambience is infectiously happy. As for the rooms (none of which have TV), north-facing are less expensive than those to the south or west but they do not have a balcony. Whirlpool baths are standard.
