Daniel and Marinette Chambon’s gorgeous hotel started life in 1886 as a farmhouse café for travellers using the bridge over the River Ouysse. The stone bridge is no longer – it was damaged by floods – so the location at the foot of a cliff below Château Belcastel is delightfully tranquil.

Try to imagine the romantic setting for dinner beneath a starlit sky: a riverside terrace with prettily-laid tables generously spaced under floodlit walnut and lime trees. Don’t get carried away, however, because the Chambons' (père et fils) Michelin-starred cuisine deserves your full attention. His maxim is “le plus difficile est de faire simple” so you will gather that his cooking is inventive but without pretension. Râble de lièvre sauce grande veneur et quelques champignons du pays and Cocotte de Rocamadour de chez Chambon, au mascarpone et truffes are examples of his autumn specialities. High-priced menus are justified by his meticulous selection of locally-sourced ingredients but the half-board (DB&B) rates, which include free choice from the carte, still offer remarkably good value.

Madame Chambon is equally proud of her accommodations. Bedrooms face the terrace; some are up a spiral staircase. Each is individually styled with strongish colours, painted beams and wooden floors (slippers are provided to minimise clanking). There is a footpath for riverside walks, a lovely garden and a most attractive pool-with-a view.
