The Loire Valley has very few hotels that nudge the banks of the great river. So here’s a good value solution for first timers or families who want to understand why the area has such an enduring appeal. Admittedly the Manoir Bel Air is larger than the norm in our selection of memorable hotels and, as a result, it welcomes a good number of business and tourist groups. But there’s plenty of space for everyone and standards remain high whatever the clientele.

So here we have a 17th century maison de maître, a handsome building that once belonged to a governor of Guadeloupe. The accommodations are spacious, light and airy. Choose between a far-reaching river view (this carries a supplement) or an outlook over the garden. The bathrooms are equally good – much better than you would expect for the price, given also the excellent location. Cuisine in the busy panoramic restaurant is traditional, tasty and attractively presented. And good use is made of the terrace with its views of the river.

All in all, Manoir Bel Air can be highly recommended. It has resisted the temptation to push too far upmarket (unlike some of its over-sophisticated competitors) and, as such, will continue to do good business whatever the economic climate.
