Any hotel that is slap bang on a main road is normally a Memorable Hotels no-no. But then we came across the Auberge de la Truffe and... well, there have to be exceptions to every rule!
What makes this place so special is not just the restaurant (more of that later) but the way that it exemplifies all that is so special about French hospitality. It’s a classic Logis de France with an apposite motto to boot: un accueil généreux, un confort chaleureux et une table authentique. The accommodations are pleasantly spacious and attractively furnished. Some rooms are at ground level at the rear of the hotel; their terraces are not particularly private but they are the preferred option to minimise traffic noise. Choose the best available. The swimming pool is just across a side road and has a sliding roof.
And so to Pierre Corre’s cuisine. In season, anyone who shares his passion can join a truffle hunting week-end and/or feast on the €100 Menu Truffes. The rest of us can settle down in the bright and cheerful restaurant – or out on the terrace in warmer weather – to enjoy a heart-warming array of traditional dishes (les plats de nos grands-mères). There’s usually an appreciative buzz from locals, too, as they laud his innovative ways with the gastronomic treasures of the Périgord. And all this at remarkably reasonable prices (Michelin awards a Bib gourmand). Brilliant.
