The Neyrette is one of those hotel discoveries that you sometimes stumble across when you explore off the beaten track. Ever heard of Dévoluy? It’s is a picturesque region of mountains, forests and trout streams just to the west of the Route Napoléon between Grenoble and Gap. There are a couple of low-key ski resorts within easy reach and the hiking and fishing in summer are immensely rewarding.

Standing 1040 m above sea level, this Logis de France is owned and managed by the Muzard family. There’s a particularly warm welcome reserved for bikers but all guests feel immediately at home as a result of the friendly, informal ambience. The (dinner-only) restaurant is located in an old mill. Its speciality is trout, either smoked in-house or caught by you in the small lake right outside the hotel. The quality and value of the cuisine has been recognised by the award of the coveted Bib Gourmand. Don’t miss the oreille d’âne if it’s available – you may never get another chance!

The peaceful bedrooms, each with a mountain flower as its theme, are seriously dated but not expensive. So why not delve into uncharted territory and seek out the Neyrette? Who knows, you may be pleasantly surprised.
