On the fringe of the island’s main town, this family-run, white-fronted hotel in marine/Vendéen style was comprehensively updated in 2004. It’s a tranquil spot where all is now fresh and full of character, thanks to good textiles, the odd antique and judicious use of natural materials.

Standard accommodations (called ‘cosy’ to indicate the size) are either on the first floor with distant views of the castle and church or at ground level overlooking the heated pool (with jacuzzi). Superior rooms have a nautical theme and a south-facing terrace with direct access to the attractive garden.

The restaurant is, perhaps, the pièce de résistance. Eric Pichou’s cuisine gets rave reviews in guide books and from the largely French clientele. Bearing in mind the high standards, both menus and wine list are very fairly priced. You can dine on the terrace or in one of two indoor areas. The first has white-painted wood panelling and paintings of local scenes by the owners' daughter. The other has a large picture window to embrace the spectacular sunsets.

The little fishing port, with its shops and cafés, is just 5 – 10 minutes on foot but cycling is the best way to get around, particularly if you are heading for the beach. The island is flat and bikes can be hired from the hotel.
