Auberge de Carcille presses all the right buttons. In the valley below Gordes, one of the Luberon’s best known villages, the hotel has an easy-going, informal air that belies a steely professionalism.

Like most of the houses in Gordes, the hotel is built in pale dry stone; it is set well back from the road so traffic is unlikely to disturb – there’s a separate car park for non-residents who just come to dine. And the restaurant is deservedly popular locally, both for its delectable cuisine and, although not inexpensive, its seriously good value for money.

This typical Logis de France generosity extends also to the accommodation which is bright, cheerful and bang-up-to-date with flat screens and wifi.  The bedrooms are reasonably spacious as indeed are the stylish, modern bathrooms. First floor rooms with balconies overlooking the garden are a good choice but take whatever you are offered because the hotel books up quickly.

Families will welcome the lawned garden and the attractive, sheltered swimming pool (sited well away from the bedrooms).
