VILLA ST MAXIME, ST-PAUL-DE-VENCE

An immaculate hotel owned by an American couple who manage the place in a stylishly individual manner. Their British architect has created an ultra-contemporary space, full of light and colour, where antiques vie with modern art in the vaulted halls and cool, spacious bedrooms. One wag likened the villa to a Rubik cube infused with glass, stone and Carrara marble.

There are panoramic views from the terrace beside the huge pool and the village of St-Paul-de-Vence, with its many art galleries and restaurants, is a 10-15 minute (uphill) walk. Lunch and dinner are not provided but an empty refrigerator has been thoughtfully installed in each room.

The hotel’s hospitality, however, kicks off with a fine Champagne breakfast – included in the room price and served until noon. Complimentary, too, are the aperitifs which the owners offer before you depart each evening for dinner in your chosen restaurant and the digestif trolley that awaits your return. This leads to a rather civilised house party ambience which all guests seem to appreciate.

Clearly, however, it would be unwise to expect a particularly French experience from Villa St Maxime. That said, the owners are a fountain of information about local amenities and go out of their way to ensure that guests want for nothing in this highly individual hotel which is reserved for adults and children over 11 years old.
