This is a small hotel on the main square of a little town set in unremarkable countryside just to the east of Amiens. Hence it’s a handy stopover for those plying the A16 motorway or a good base for visiting the WW1 memorials of the Somme. If Sebastian Faulks’ Birdsong made you cry buckets, you’ll probably head straight for where his love story begins - the St Leu district of Amiens with its delightful Hortillonages water gardens.

Given the town centre location, the Macassar's private garden à la française is a delightful surprise. But it is the art deco and art nouveau interiors that are the principal creative triumphs of British owners Miguel and Ian. Their renovation is immaculate so family bookings, regretfully, cannot be accepted. Indeed, the attention to detail could be described as obsessive were it not for their friendly, informal hospitality which engulfs guests on arrival.

A complimentary cocktail might be offered in the bar/billiard room before you are shown to your room where no expense has been spared in providing the highest quality bedding and a superbly appointed bathroom. Candles, scented sprays and whirlpool baths sit comfortably with antiques, marble fireplaces and CD players.

There is a brasserie within walking distance (when closed on Sunday evenings, Macassar offers a table d'hôte) and breakfast offers a wonderful choice of home-cooked goodies prepared by Miguel for your delectation.
