Bertrand and Sylvette Alizer, owners of this attractive hotel in the centre of its appellation wine village, have got the bit between their teeth. Out with the creeky, old-fashioned auberge rooms oozing dodgy plumbing and tired carpets. In with newly created suites, some of which will be bigger than the average London flat!

The renovation continues apace but the essential character of the hotel is unchanged. The two restaurants (la Rose is conventional, le Coq more of a bistro) have an infectious buzz, courtesy of the excellent value cuisine which Michelin recognises with a Bib gourmand. The Coq au vin de Juliénas is legendary so make sure you reserve a table when you book your room. Meals can be served on the terrace in summer and there is a little garden in which to relax before dinner.

Breakfast is mainly a help-yourself affair but orange juice is brought in a jug and coffee is drunk from a mug. Vineyards cover the hillsides so you can taste some very high quality wine as you walk amid this bucolically scenic landcape. Chez la Rose keeps a good cellar too, managed with the same enthusiasm as all other aspects of the hotel.
