Kientzheim, like its well-known near neighbours Kayserberg, Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé, is an historic wine village where every corner seems to open up another picture-postcard streetscape. Unlike them, however, Kientzheim has escaped the tourist throngs so its medieval heart basks in splendid tranquillity. Inside the ramparts and overlooking the staggeringly pretty little square, stands the handsome Hotel Schwendi.

The owners of this Logis de France are relative new-comers to the village, having run the hotel for just three generations! But the Schillé-Gisies are patrons who do not rest on their laurels. They have increased capacity by adding La Maison Germaine, a recently converted annexe just across the cobbled square. It oozes the same Alsatian character as the main building where the accommodations were renovated in 2003. All are individually decorated and clearly illustrated on the website but those with exposed beams in the annexe are particular favourites.

Fabien Schillé is the talented chef and his menus demonstrate an extensive repertoire of regional specialities as well as classic French dishes. Another member of the family produces wine from one of the nearby vineyards; here a footpath for interested visitors has been thoughtfully interspersed with information on local grape varieties and wine-making techniques.
