The Ithurria is something of an institution in the region. It may be because the hotel has been in the same family for three generations.

Xavier Isabal is the current incumbent and he has earned a Michelin star for his exceptional cuisine. The restaurant is full of ambience, shrouded by a dark beamed ceiling so that diners focus on the serious business in hand. Noix de coquilles Saint Jacques au crémeux de cèpes et haricots blancs or Joux de lotte au fenouil confit et beurre citronné are current offerings from the superior menu.

There is a bar, fitness room and sauna plus an inviting swimming pool in the two acre garden which also hosts the chef’s all important potager. From here, the views towards the Pyrenean foothills are quite exquisite. The accommodations at the front could be noisy because the hotel stands in the centre of one of the prettiest villages in France. But the double glazing works well and there is air-conditioning to temper any summer heat waves.

The fronton which gives its name to the square is the open sided ‘court’ where the Basque national game of pelote is played. It’s fast, tough and exciting so try not to miss a match. Despite its many accolades and long-standing reputation, the Ithurria remains first and foremost a family affair, boasting generous cuisine, regularly renovated rooms and very fair prices.
