Here’s a pleasant little hotel – more a restaurant-with-rooms actually - on a rocky headland just a few yards from the centre of Lomener. It’s a low-key seaside village, animated by a beach, a gaggle of shops and hundreds of boats crammed into the micro-port.

If your priorities in Brittany are good food, sea air and unbeatable value for money, the Vivier will fit the bill perfectly. True, the decor in the restaurant is unremarkable, as bland as the architecture in the surrounding Morbihan department. But this pales into insignificance when the charming patronne arrives with a delectable timbale of salmon, crab and asparagus as yet another impressive dinner gets under way. Sea food and fish are, of course, the specialities. Michelin singles out the restaurant with a bib gourmand for good food at moderate prices, noting as well the particularly interesting wine list.

Bedrooms are perfectly functional and refreshed regularly, each having the benefit of a full-length bay window looking out towards the Ile de Groix. With the exception of the three best rooms with bath, jacuzzi bath and/or terrace, all accommodations are equipped with shower.

Nearby Lorient, the second most important fishing harbour in France, is also the home port of Eric Tabarly. The Cité de la Voile, dedicated to his sailing triumphs and his influence on the sport internationally, opened its doors in spring 2008.
