The core of the Hotel Castel Brando is a tall, 19th century maison de maître that stands behind a wall directly on the landward side of the Bastia – Cap Corse road.

The hotel is full of character and right in the centre of one of the few really attractive villages on the cape’s eastern shore. Indeed, Erbalunga is a ‘classé’ fishing village with quaint, largely pedestrianised lanes leading down to the little dock. It has a good variety of restaurants – including the Michelin-starred Pirate – so the lack of a restaurant at the hotel poses no problem.

Because of its innate appeal, Erbalunga is a popular haunt for day trippers. But the grounds of the hotel stretch on the landward side of the coast road so most of the accommodations are relatively tranquil. Ground floor rooms in the modern annexes are generally approached through French windows from their terraces and so are somewhat dark when the shutters are closed for privacy. This clearly doesn’t worry many people since reports are overwhelmingly favourable, particularly as regards the helpful staff. But our preference would still be for a top floor room (‘privilège’) with balcony in the pink annexe, overlooking the second (smaller) swimming pool.

This hotel is not really suitable for families. Although the sea is only about 100m from the hotel, the nearest sandy beach is a good 10 km drive.
