The Atlantic weather is always unpredictable but St-Jean-de-Luz is a delight whatever colour the sky. And if your taste is for turn-of-the century Belle Epoque, the Hotel Parc Victoria will be just your ticket.

The setting is delightful: flowers and wild life flourish with gay abandon in the 2½ acre parc which is dotted with venerable yew trees. This is a residential area about 5 minutes’ walk from the beach and only 15 minutes on foot to the picturesque old town. Such, however, is the tranquillity and the kaleidoscope of colour, light and shade that you could be forgiven for imagining yourself in the garden of an intimate country house hotel.

There’s a games room and a reading room with furnishing throughout a mix of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Prices rocket if you choose a sumptuous suite with a private garden but rates for smaller rooms are more reasonable.

Cuisine is in the capable hands of Guillaume Applaincourt, a chef with an innovative approach to the Basque and Landaise terroir. The formal restaurant is a leafy conservatory but meals may also be taken on the rose-scented terrace or beside the pool. Breakfast is an excellent spread – and so it should be at that price. As for the staff, they are charming and will remember you if, like many, you’re on a return visit.
