The eponymous 17th century mill straddles the River Dronne in a little village to the north-east of charming Brantôme. It’s a bucolic setting, enhanced by some of the loveliest hotel gardens we have found in France. In the immaculate 2½ acre parc, a series of tranquil outdoor rooms provide idyllic retreats in which to relax, to read or just to contemplate your good fortune at having chosen to stay in this Périgordin gem. A private wooden bridge crosses the river to the infinity pool and there’s a tennis court if you need some exercise.

The riverside accommodations are beautifully and individually furnished (antiques, four posters etc) and most have air-conditioning. Bathrooms have Hermès goodies and usually a whirlpool bath too. In one of the sitting rooms, the oil mill machinery is still in working order. Others have just as much character but the terrace beside the river is an all too tempting alternative.

Alain Gardillou’s cuisine richly deserves its Michelin star. Soupe glacée aux herbes du jardin is a signature dish; for dessert, a whole Tarte fondant au chocolat mi-amer might be brought to the table for you to share. The list is of 900 wines is equally distinguished.

The Moulin du Roc is a sophisticated hotel in a wonderful setting with an excellent restaurant. At these prices, you’ll be hard pushed to find finer value for money.
