LE MAS DE GUILLES, LOURMARIN

This is a lovely old 17th century Provencal mas, buried in flattish countryside on the warmer, southern side of the Luberon hills. The hotel is a Relais du Silence, standing at the end of an unmade road, fenced and gated with a code for entry.

The grounds, part of a 50 acre estate, are beautifully kept, with a very good swimming pool in an enclosure that is protected from the mistral by hedges and stone walls. A tennis court and boulodrome are useful additions but this is essentially an hotel for peaceful relaxation and fun-packed social activities would not be encouraged.

Steer clear of the base rate accommodations unless you are just overnighting and plump instead for a prestige room with a terrace and, if possible, a view. Bedroom décor is traditional, enhanced by lovely old armoires. Unusually, ground floor rooms afford reasonable privacy but do discuss all the available options with Madame Lherm when you book.

Patrick Lherm is a talented chef and his half-board terms are eminently sensible: from his original (dinner only) menu, guests select from three dishes in each course, two of which change daily. Hence it is difficult to fault this immaculately-kept establishment, apart perhaps from the lack of a/c (given the room prices) and the frosty attitude of the owners if you inadvertently offend.
