HOTEL LE CHAMOIS D'OR, CORDON

The fourth generation of Petit-Jeans at the Chamois d’Or continue the family tradition of cosseting their guests; so it comes as no surprise that the hotel has so many habitués. But the place would be deservedly popular even without the warmth and charm of the current owners. Here’s why:

1 Cordon, a drop-dead gorgeous Alpine village, perfect for summer hiking and low-key skiing (shuttle bus to the pistes from the end of the drive).

2 The hotel’s stunning location on the edge of the village, with mesmerising views either to the Aravis chain or to majestic Mont Blanc in the east.

3 All the accommodation in this imposing chalet has a balcony from which to sit and gaze – and they’re enhanced by multi-coloured window boxes in summer. The compact bathrooms have been renovated recently, those with shower being exclusively on the Aravis side.

Remember that, with open views all around, the Petit-Jeans see no reason to charge a supplement for a room overlooking Mont Blanc. It’s a stiffish walk down to the village centre but there’s an in-house restaurant and, in summer, a large heated pool and a generous garden to deter you from straying. Indoors, you’ll find a games room, jacuzzi, sauna and fitness centre.

Airy and immaculately-maintained, the Chamois d’Or should fit everyone’s idea of a cheery, mid-range base in the most scenic part of the French Alps.
