Within its thick limestone walls, the Château d’Igé wallows amid flagstone floors and spiral staircases which wind their way up its circular turrets. An hotel, yes, but it’s more like living on a film set without all the luvvies.

Yet Igé is also wonderfully romantic. This is all down to the skill of Françoise Faucon in creating an ambience that everyone, from honeymooners to empty-nesters, simply adores. Despite the grandeur of the interiors – we’re talking huge stone fireplaces, fabric covered walls, half-tester beds, majestic suites – there is none of the pomp and pretence that often goes hand in hand with some such establishments.

What then is her recipe for success? Significant, regular investment means that the bathrooms are superb, the roof is in good nick and wifi and flat screen TVs have been added recently. The garden receives her special attention and its secret corners beside a little stream are just enchanting. Chef Olivier Pons reaps many of his organic ingredients from the potager. His gourmet dinners are served in one of three splendidly atmospheric rooms or on the terrace in fine weather.

Sympathique Mme Germond gives full credit to her professional, friendly staff. It’s clearly a team effort, inspired from the top, and there are few who will leave disaffected by this historic hotel, peacefully set on the edge of an attractive village amid the gentle Mâconnais hills.
